the 10 kinkiest kinky boots, kinky boots (boop boop) of the 1960s

The fashion boot made its first official appearance in the early 1950s. Beth and Herbert Levine began incorporating leather calf-highs into their collections as early as 1953, much to the shock and horror of the fashion world. Boots were thought of as largely utilitarian at the time, but by the mid-1960s, the Levines had proved their skeptics wrong, and the boot secured its place in the world of haute couture. Today, gogo boots, kinky thigh highs and kitten-heeled ankle booties are still strongly associated with the Swinging Sixties. Here are our ten favorites of the decade:

10 Loana (One Million Years B.C., 1966)

They may not be kinky in the traditional sense, but if you’ve got a fetish for rave boots, cavewomen or just Raquel Welch, then these furry little ankle booties might be just the pair for you to subjugate yourself before.

9 Judy Robinson (Lost in Space, 1965-68)

Want to kink up your tired old cowgirl boots? Try pairing them with a leotard and tights like Marta Kristen here. Add a cape and gloves for a fresh space colonist spin. (Phallic headdress is optional but highly recommended.)

8 Catwoman (Batman, 1966-68)

I know the Viscountess of Venality has already made quite a few appearances on our little fledgling blog, but one can hardly talk kink without at least some mention of Catwoman! In the 1960s live action TV show, the Marchioness of Misdemeanors opted for black leather ankle booties, either folded down or rolled up like Eartha Kitt’s here.

7 Yasmin Azir (Arabesque, 1966)

We only see Sophia Loren trying these white patent leather beauties on for a moment in this 1966 comedy thriller, but it is a moment worth engraving in our filthy memories.

6 Brigitte Bardot (Harley Davidson, 1967)

There are three stars in Brigitte Bardot’s music video for her 1967 single Harley Davidson – Bardot, the Harley and those fabulously kinky motorcycle boots. (In no particular order.)

5 Lieutenant Uhura (Star Trek, 1966-69)

Similar to Bardot’s boots above, Nichelle Nichols’s black leather thigh highs boast two major advantages over our number six spot: 1) They come with a seriously sexy dagger stuffed inside, and 2) Their wearer didn’t wilt into a raving fascist in her later years. So yes, dear reader, in the end it is the puss who makes the boot.

4 Emma Peel (The Avengers, 1965-68)

Diana Rigg’s Mrs. Peel was certainly no stranger to kinky boots in the hit British espionage series, The Avengers, but in this particularly memorable season four episode, she infiltrates a Roccoco orgy, dressed in a corset, wolf collar and lace-up calf-lengths. Need I really say more?

3 Barbarella (Barbarella, 1968)

Dubbed by Penthouse magazine as ‘the kinkiest film of the year,’ Barbarella showcases a wide, colorful array of space boots, ranging from little plastic-covered ankle booties to these thigh-high beauties below. (Notice Jane Fonda’s gorgeous, non-airbrushed gams by the way.)

2 Nancy Sinatra (These Boots Are Made for Walkin’, 1966)

Musically, no has done more for fashion boots than Nancy Sinatra. Her hit single These Boots Are Made for Walkin’ off her 1966 album, Boots, hit the number one spot in both the US and the UK and was recorded in various languages around the world. Music executive Stan Cornyn, when advising Sinatra on how she should sing the song, reportedly described the song’s protagonist as possessing, ‘The power to exalt, or to destroy, wanting only the former, but unafraid to invoke the latter if the time comes. The eyes that see through, know more, look longer. Unafraid to pull on the boots again, toss off a burnt out thing with a casual “So long, babe,” and get.’

1 Cathy Gale (The Avengers, 1962-64)

Two years before Sinatra unleashed her Boots onto the world, Honor Blackman released her Kinky Boots. Performed with fellow co-star Patrick Macnee, the novelty song was a nod to Blackman’s famous television character, Mrs. Gale. With her leather outfits and fetishistic boots, The Avengers character helped mold Blackman into one of the greatest British sex symbols of the decade.

(Did I mention Mrs. Peel’s snake?)
